Naples is one of the most unexpected corners of Long Beach. Built around canals and small islands, the neighbourhood was inspired by Venice and feels completely different from downtown even though it is only a short distance away.
The best way to experience Naples is simply to walk. Small bridges cross the canals, boats sit beside waterfront homes and the streets encourage a slower pace than most Southern California sightseeing.
Walk the canals
You do not need a complicated route. Start near the water and wander across the bridges, remembering that this is also a residential neighbourhood. Respect private property and keep the visit to public streets and paths.
Kayaking and paddleboarding can provide another perspective on the surrounding waterways, depending on conditions and local access.
Combine Naples with Belmont Shore
Naples fits naturally with nearby Belmont Shore. Spend some time around the canals and then continue towards Second Street for cafés, restaurants and shops.
The neighbourhood is particularly atmospheric around the holiday season when local decorations have become a tradition, although it is enjoyable throughout the year.
For me, Naples is valuable because it adds something different to a Long Beach itinerary. After the large-scale harbour, Queen Mary and downtown attractions, these quiet canals reveal a smaller, more residential side of life beside the water.
