Plan your journey to Long Beach and discover the easiest ways to explore the city, its beautiful waterfront and the surrounding Southern California region.
Long Beach is located in Southern California, approximately 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
The city is accessible by plane, car, train and public transportation, making it a convenient destination for visitors exploring the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Once you arrive, several transportation options make it possible to explore the waterfront, downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Flying to Long Beach
Long Beach Airport (LGB) is the city’s main passenger airport.
Located northeast of downtown, it offers domestic flight connections to selected American destinations.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is another option, particularly for international visitors.
From either airport, you can continue your journey by taxi, rideshare service, shuttle or rental car.
Travel times can vary considerably depending on traffic conditions.
Travelling by Car
Long Beach is connected to the surrounding region by several major highways.
Interstate 710 provides access to downtown Long Beach, while Interstate 405 connects the city with other parts of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Driving from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach can take around 30–60 minutes, although heavy traffic may increase the journey time.
If you are planning a longer California road trip, Long Beach is a convenient stop between Los Angeles and Orange County.
Getting Around Long Beach
Long Beach Transit operates local bus services throughout the city.
The Metro A Line connects downtown Long Beach with downtown Los Angeles and other destinations along the route.
Walking is pleasant around Rainbow Harbor, Shoreline Village and downtown Long Beach.
Cycling is another enjoyable way to explore the coastal areas, particularly along the city’s beachfront paths.
Visiting Catalina Island
Passenger ferries connect Long Beach with Catalina Island.
The journey to Avalon generally takes approximately one hour.
Check ferry schedules and book ahead during popular travel periods.
Do You Need a Car?
If you are mainly staying downtown and visiting waterfront attractions, you may be able to explore much of Long Beach without renting a car.
However, a rental car can be useful if you want to visit several beaches, explore Orange County or take day trips around Southern California.
For a first visit, I recommend spending at least two or three days in Long Beach. This gives you time to discover the waterfront, explore the Queen Mary and Aquarium of the Pacific, and enjoy the city’s coastal neighbourhoods.
